R3 evaluation

WOW what a learning curve we have been on! I have learnt a great deal both on myself as a teacher and about the students I take. It has been a wonderful opportunity to help these students to become more confident readers and speakers.
I feel that I have developed significant skills in reciprocal teaching and this has lead to my improved questioning skills. Teaching the students how to run a session and handing over the 'teaching' to them has proved to be very powerful. They enjoy the challenge of questioning each other and locating the answers.
The support we have received from each other and the TE's has been invaluable. Being able to ask questions of each other in a non-threatening environment and having the knowledge of the TE's to guide us has has been beneficial.
I have learnt a great deal and feel that I am ready to make a difference with a new group next year!

Viewing an R3 session

What an amazing session! It was brilliant to see the reciprocal teaching in action with students. I found it inspiring and helpful. Seeing how Jen was able model how to clarify words and write/ create questions was extremely helpful. She used her talk aloud to model not only her own thoughts but to give inspiration to her students.
The continual praise and support given to each student through the out loud thinking, the sentence starters and anchor charts was great to see. I could see how these things benefit all the students and how there are clear goals and strategies they can use.
I found it all inspiring.

Reflection on R3 session

As always it is great to catch up with the other R3 teachers and be comforted in the idea that we all have similar concerns about our students.
Reading the article 'Closing in on Close Reading' brought forward some key questions that I had had. After administering the BAS I realised that my students score poorly due to their inability to delve deeper into the text. Through the article I have come to realise that I need to include more questions about the authors choice of language and  what are they trying to tell me. Modelling these type of questions is extremely important as we need out students to ask themselves these questions when they are reading any text. This is a major challenge we all have and one that we can work on together.
